Why pride in place should have pride of place in social media conversations

At Maybe* we are all about showing love for a location. Pride in place increases the sentiment of the conversation about a place, and the volume of conversation about it. Celebrating place benefits all businesses in a local area by drawing engagement, inspiring visitors and resonating with locals..

Every week we profile towns and cities across the UK, demonstrating what indie businesses are doing to stay active, stay connected, and inspire new and existing customers to shop and spend locally.

Next stop, Northleach. Any business in any local place can apply these tactics. In fact we’re working with the whole of the Cotswolds to help them make social media work for them in a bid to support recovery across the UK.

How many businesses in Northleach create social media content everyday?

Of those 30% of businesses, an average of 20% of them are active every day. Unlike many other towns who see a consistent drop off in activity at weekends, Northleach’s businesses are sporadic in activity across the week.

How many posts do businesses make and how engaging are they?

Northleach businesses created an average of 15 pieces of social media content per day throughout October which is quite a bit lower than many other of the Cotswolds towns. Those social posts earn approximately 38 engagements per day. That’s about 2-3 engagements per post.

Northleach’s posting volumes are inconsistent and low, and therefore engagement follows suit. Businesses should increase their activity especially now we are in the run up to Christmas.

What conversations do Northleach’s businesses create?

Northleach and the Cotswolds hashtag sits at the centre of the conversation demonstrating businesses do a great job talking about place. Unlike many of the other local towns in the Cotswold area, there is little conversation about local businesses which is not surprising given business posting volumes are so low. However local tourist spots such as the Old Prison and the local landscape do feature, as well as seasonal content about Oktoberfest. The town has plenty to offer, it just needs to beat its chest a little more proudly.

The mood of the conversation across Northleach shoots up and down. Sometimes it is positive, other times it's neutral. Neutral levels of conversation can be impacted by social media posts that are solely image based with no text, or posts that re-share links. It's so important for local businesses to ensure what they post is explained in a positive, friendly and upbeat manner.
