According to Emojipedia and Unicode, the governing body behind emojis, here are some of the top-ranked prospects:
- Phoenix: A symbol of rebirth and resilience, perfect for everything from acing a tough job interview to recovering from a hangover.
- Lime: The citrus fruit is making a trendy comeback, backed by a Change.org petition demanding its addition to the emoji roster!
- Families: In a move towards inclusivity, four diverse family-based emojis are under consideration.
- Head-shaking horizontally and vertically: These will convey non-verbal "yes" and "no" signals.
- Broken chain: This could symbolise a broken relationship or a literal broken chain.
The candidate list also includes emojis of people in motion in different directions while running or using a wheelchair, coupled with skin tone modifiers.
Apple joins the celebration ?
Not to be outdone, Apple celebrated World Emoji Day by revealing new emoji and Memoji experiences coming to the iPhone with iOS 17. New features include a custom Contact Poster, allowing you to appear as your cartoon character during texts or calls, and three new Memoji stickers — Halo, Smirk, and Peekaboo. ???
Additionally, iOS 17 will let you use emoji stickers on messages, photos, and documents. If you're eager for an early preview, the iOS 17 public beta is available for download on a secondary device.
